Common bookbinding styles: What you need to know
A Novel, valuable research, autobiography, fictional book, whatever it is, type of binding should be thoroughly considered after scanning books for reference. But with so many binding types with unique features and uses, it can be hard to think of just one that might fit your needs. To help with that, here are some common book binding types and the information you need.
Double wiring and plastic coil
As the name suggests, a plastic coil binding uses coils made of plastic to bind or hold printed material together. The printed material and the cover are punched with small holes on the material’s book bond edge. When done, the plastic coil is woven into the holes.
The exact process is made for double wiring bind. However, instead of plastic coils, it uses double-loop wires inserted through the punched holes. Double wiring and plastic coils are great for journals, calendars, notebooks, presentations and more that need constant page removal. It is also ideal for materials that requirea completepage turn to lie flat on a surface.
Perfect binding
The perfect binding type is mainly used for commercially produced paperback books. It has similarities with hardcover binding but is way less expensive. Perfect binding uses thick cardstock as a cover while the spine is threaded and glued together for additional superior strength to the binding. Perfect binding is an excellent alternative for hardcover while still being practical for presentations. It is ideal for nonfiction and fiction trade paperbacks, user manuals, large catalogs, and many more.
Hardcover or casebound
Hardcover, also known as case binding, is considered one of the best options people can get. Hardcovers have a thick and rigid covering, which allows protection for the printed materials. Hardcovers make books more durable and long-lasting. The pages inside are sewn in sections and glued to the endpapers, which are finally glued again to the cover’s spine. When opened, hardcover allows books to lay flat on the surface.
