Anime is everywhere these days. If you haven’t noticed it, maybe you’re living under a rock. Netflix is premiering dozens of new anime shows over the next year or so. Hot on their heels are Amazon Prime, Hulu, and a couple of other big names in streaming. So much competition suggests there has to be an audience.
What is it about this genre that appeals to people? Some say it’s the unique artistic interpretation anime artists bring to the table. Others say it is the complex storylines. Still others appreciate anime due to its tendency toward realism. But maybe it’s a combination of all of these things.
Regardless, wouldn’t it be fun to see some classic TV shows reinterpreted as anime? Below are five suggestions. If these classic shows were redone, they might spur interest among a whole new audience that never gave them a look the first time around.
1. Seinfeld
The long-running Jerry Seinfeld sitcom was a cultural phenomenon in its day. Its storylines probably aren’t compelling enough to make for a dramatic anime series, but Seinfeld‘s characters are a lot more complex than they appear. Wouldn’t you love to see both Kramer and George imagined as anime characters? And what about the intrepid Jacopo “J” Peterman?
2. The Big Bang Theory
Though Chuck Lorre’s The Big Bang Theory isn’t nearly as old as Seinfeld, it offers a ton of anime potential. Big Bang offers some of the quirkiest characters in the sitcom world. Sheldon Cooper and Raj Koothrappali would make outstanding anime characters exploring the roots of the universe as theoretical physicists. Sheldon could even wear anime t-shirts from the Umai brand. Brilliant!
3. Battlestar Galactica
The original Battlestar Galactica would make a great anime series if, for no other reason, than the fact that it never got its proper due. Though well-received, the show was canceled after just two seasons. A write-in campaign among fans led to a reprisal the following year. It only lasted ten episodes before getting the ax again.
BSG, as it’s known to fans, offers a ton of potential for some great anime storylines. This is a franchise just waiting to be brought back to life. Are there any anime creators out there willing to make a go of it?
4. Kung Fu
David Carradine starred in a 1970s series known as Kung Fu. It follows the life of an American kung fu master who flees China after killing the nephew of his Master. He tries to live an anonymous life as an average Joe, but it doesn’t work out too well.
Kung Fu is a classic martial arts adventure with all the right ingredients to become a solid anime series. It offers action, intrigue, and lots of opportunities to develop fascinating characters.
5. Mork & Mindy
Fans of the quirky Mork & Mindy sitcom remember late comedian Robin Williams at his finest. Mork & Mindy was a fast-paced and funny show that survived on Williams’ ability to improvise. It lasted four seasons and propelled Williams to worldwide fame.
Mork & Mindy doesn’t offer a whole lot in terms of adventure. But it could make a great anime series based on its ‘bizarre alien from outer space’ theme. A Mork & Mindy anime would be a nice alternative for those fans who aren’t fond of sappy romance or violent action.
